Green Sands Beach

One of only four sand beaches in the world and the only one on Hawaii islands, it gets the color from the miniscule olivine pieces created by a volcano that lay scattered in the sand. The beach is within what was a cinder cone before, and it is surrounded by it on the three sides.
Punalu’u Beach

Also known as the Black Sands beach, as its sand has been made by the lava which flowed into the ocean and cooled down to form this charry black color. Swimming here can be dangerous at times but you can still visit the place to see green turtles, hawksbill turtles and monk seals around the beach.
Akaka Falls State Park

This Park offers short hiking routes and is also home to the Akaka Falls which is 130 meters tall. Hiking is pretty easy with more or less constant elevation which makes it easy for children to hike as well with the total hike to be around 30. It makes it unmissable.
Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park

Absolutely unmissable in your vacations Hawaii list, the park encompasses through two active volcanoes Kilauea and Mauna Loa. Mount Kilauea has been spewing molten lava since 1983, which is increasing the land mass at the southern region, with more than 500 acres of land added since it started erupting. Mauna Loa is the second largest volcano on earth which may not be quite as active as Kilauea, but it offers a chance to see rare flora and fauna. Pu"uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park

Pu’uhonua translates as a ‘place of refuge.’ It is the place where the locals used to flee to in the past to avoid punishment and be absolved there by priests. It includes a number of archaeological sites such as temples, the most famous being the Hale o Keawe Temple, fishponds and coastal village sites. Get a guided tour or visit the museum within the park for more detailed insights.

This place is historically significant as it was the residence of many Hawaiian kings in the past. Soak in the natural beauty with a challenging hike or on a van tour along the steep inclined road. The valley is one-mile wide and five miles deep with several waterfalls which fall into the valley and is considered as the ‘Garden of Eden’ which is surrounded by cliffs reaching heights up to 2000 ft. Enjoy the stunning panoramic views with the best in store from a special overlook point on the southern side. There is also a black sand beach, not so good for swimming but is popular among surfers.
Kealakekua Bay

Located on the Kona coast, the place is rich in history with a number of religious temples and is also the place where Capt. James Cook, the first traveler from Europe set foot on. And it is also the place where he was killed two weeks later. It is now a popular destination for snorkeling, scuba diving and kayaking. You can see turtles, fishes and dolphins hovering around in the calm and crystal clear water. And you can always visit the Cook monument which is about an hour’s hike long or cross the bay on a boat.
Points to be noted before you travel to Hawaii
The best time to visit Hawaii is in between September and October. Rates are pretty low just after the family vacations and there isn’t much risk of heavy rain. If luxurious stay isn’t what you’re looking for, stay in the Hilo region as you can cook for yourself at backpacking lodges after picking groceries up from the Hilo farmers market. It is a great way to save money which you can spend on better things while you explore Hawaii.
Be respectful to the locals and do not address them as natives as they are Americans as well, and Hawaii is a state and not a separate country.
